TODD RUNDGREN’s Explosive Take On KING CRIMSON’s “21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN” Previews The Forthcoming Star-Studded KING CRIMSON Tribute Album!

Album features performances by King Crimson alumni Mel Collins and Jakko M. Jakszyk as well as thrash guitar god Chris Poland, Deep Purple's Ian Paice, Rainbow's Joe Lynn Turner, Dream Theater's James LaBrie, Cactus's Carmine Appice and more!

Los Angeles, CA – It’s one of the most groundbreaking debut albums of all-time, a monster of innovative musical composition and thought-provoking lyrics whose appeal and creative influence has not only endured though generations but has expanded since its initial release in 1969. In The Court Of The Crimson King is a magnum opus like no other in rock history and now an all-star gathering of rock music royalty have come together to recreate the masterpiece in its entirety!

It begins with a spectacular version of the lead off track, a mind-blowing, sonic soul-crushing blast called “21st Century Schizoid Man,” which features vocals by Rock Hall Of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren as well as theatrical legend Arthur “God Of Hellfire” Brown alongside former King Crimson saxophonist Mel Collins, guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Ian Paice. Together this extraordinarily talented quartet breathe vicious new life into the song. Rundgren’s vocal performance is nothing short of deliriously demented as he takes on the twisted psyche of King Crimson’s shattered mirror image of modern man. The single is released today on all music platforms to herald the imminent arrival of the full tribute album.

Stream/download the single: https://orcd.co/21stcenturyschizoidman

Drummer Paice recalls “I had the great privilege of seeing Crimson live in London just after the first album was released, a really inventive, wonderful band. We in Deep Purple thought they were really great!”

Set for release on April 19, Reimagining The Court Of The Crimson King unites an astounding mix of musical virtuosos and creative collaborators that’s as eclectic and far-reaching as King Crimson’s own noble cortege. Guests include all of those mentioned above plus current King Crimson vocalist/guitarist Jakko Jakszyk, Joe Lynn Turner, James LaBrie, Marty Friedman, and Carmine Appice. Adding to this stellar lineup are rock and prog giants such as Steve Hillage, known for his work with Gong, and Jah Wobble, the post-punk bass maestro and PIL & Eno collaborator; and the Hawkwind alumni trifecta of Alan Davey, Paul Rudolph, and Nik Turner, infusing the project with a cosmic touch!

This album is not just a tribute; it's a celebration and reinvention of a musical masterpiece, bringing together the past, present, and future of rock music. Don't miss this unparalleled musical journey.

Markus Reuter & Stefano Castagna To Release New Collaborative Album “Sea of Hopeless Angels”

An unexpected concerto. The streets of Berlin. Nourishment and exhaustion. The celestial, moving among us. All of these things might describe (or, more accurately, permeate) Markus Reuter’s latest project – a spontaneous collaboration with Stefano Castagna.

From a strictly Reuterian perspective, “Sea of Hopeless Angels” could be seen as a reaction to Markus’ furious and abrasive work with the free-rock improvisation quartet Anchor & Burden, one of his central priorities during 2022. At the same time, it stems directly from that project (having emerged in the heart of actual band time) and also serves as an intentional sequel-of-sorts to the “Anchor and Burden – Musica 2021” album which, while consisting of solo soundscapes, served as a conceptual introduction to the band. An understanding and acceptance of music as being both fundamental and stabilizing, while also being a grave and sometimes disruptive weight, underpinned both band and solo recording; and also eventually left its imprint on this new work.

The seeds of what would become “Sea of Hopeless Angels” were several unedited “live-in-the-studio” electric touch guitar solos by Markus, recorded at Castle Studios, Germany, 26 July 2022 (during day two of a three-day recording session for the Anchor & Burden band’s ‘Kosmonautik Pilgrimage’). Unusually – especially considering the ferocity of his recent work – Markus mostly selected clean instrumental tones, feeling that after much previous experimentation he’d finally found a way to speak through them musically. From there, the solos ended up in the hands of the album’s mixer, Stefano, and it was there that they underwent a new transformation.

Although Stefano’s connection with Markus goes back to the recording of mixing of Markus’ “TRUCE 2” album in 2021 (and his mixing wizardry also helped to hone the “Mata Atlantica” album), this is the first time that the two of them have collaborated on composition. From his own Ritmo&Blu studios in Pozzolengo, northern Italy, Stefano has created and produced recordings of Italian indie music, film and television soundtracks, dance music and performances for theatre, ballet and visual art exhibitions. However, his true roots are at that point where 1980s art rock intertwines with jazz, Mediterranean music and experimental sound (something reflected in his Flos project with Luca Formentini, with its mixture of invented instruments, found sound and avant-pop songcraft). It is this nexus of inspirations which drives his sympathies with Markus. It informed their work together on “TRUCE 2”, and drew Markus into the same year’s “Mask of Confidence” project (a collaboration between Stefano, Fabio Trentini and Jeff Collier, which hearkens back to the keystone art-pop work of Mick Karn and Japan).

Inspired to bring out his own palette of sounds, Stefano took on this set of Reuter solos and produced instinctive counterpart work, gradually building up to become a sympathetic one-man orchestra. “Listening through, I perceived a very free and sinuous narrative, undulating between some slow meditative sections and some faster, rhythmic moments. I have tried to support this narrative throughout, keeping his performances always in the foreground, highlighting the most outstanding parts, adding sounds and instruments when needed (my own vocals, samples, bass or synth sounds and electronic variations added in the mixing process). It's just as if I let Markus tell his story and let it guide me throughout, without too much thinking.

“As I listen to the final result, I realize that I was playing out the lesson I learnt from two records that were pivotal in my artistic education, Fripp/Summers’ ‘I Advance Masked’ and Eno/Byrne’s ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’, famously conceived and brought about by a duo rather than a band.”

Markus concurs with this particular connection, adding, “the vibe quite strongly reminds me of the instrumental half of David Sylvian’s ‘Gone to Earth’ album.”

The music on “Sea of Hopeless Angels” is also directly inspired by Wim Wenders’ celebrated “Damiel and Cassiel” films – “Der Himmel über Berlin” (“Wings of Desire”) and “In weiter Ferne, so nah!” (“Faraway, So Close”) – in which angels hover above pre- and post-unification Berlin and are gradually, inexorably and transformatively drawn towards the lives of its human inhabitants. Although the chosen titles of several of these pieces refer directly to characters from the films, the music remains mysterious; and reluctant to draw a straightforward picture.

Stefano’s initial responses and reactions to the music also informed the selection of the album’s visual component – although, as opposed to his instinctive musical choices, the choice of cover art in particular was much more deliberate and considered.

All of the pieces on “Sea of Hopeless Angels” feature video accompaniment drawn from the Italian painter and video-artist Aldo Grazzi archives, with two of them (including the currently viewable title track) also accompanied by live-in-the-studio footage of Markus’ original performances.

Markus: “What I love about this record in particular is that it is the marriage of spontaneous creation and considered composition. The video that shows me playing in the studio is wondrous because of that. It would be impossible to play like I do if it was pre-planned/composed.”

Rock Guitar Hero STEVE STEVENS Explores The Dark Side Of Progressive Rock On New Single “Darkest Hour” With Supergroup THE PROG COLLECTIVE, Preview Haunting New Album!

Album features performances by Steve Morse, King Crimson violinist David Cross, GnR guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, and keyboard legend Patrick Moraz plus members of Weather Report, Utopia, Angel, Soft Machine, Gong, and more!

Los Angeles, CA – As longtime guitarist and co-writer for the powerhouse rock hitmaker Billy Idol, Steve Stevens is widely celebrated as a master of composing forceful, electrifying rock melodies that balance their intensity with an undeniable mainstream appeal. It’s that melodic sensibility matched with an impressive technical mastery that has made Stevens one of the most sought after collaborators in music today. Recently, Stevens accepted an invitation to contribute to the new album from The Prog Collective and the result is one of the purest expressions of Stevens’s creativity ever captured.

For the uninitiated, The Prog Collective, founded and helmed by producer/multi-instrumentalist and famed bassist for Yes Billy Sherwood, has united some of the finest musicians of rock, jazz, metal, pop and everything in between since its founding in 2012. The group’s newest studio effort, entitled Dark Encounters, takes a deliberate turn toward a more brooding and melancholic musical path, filled with haunting ambience and eerie melodic passages. All of this makes Stevens the perfect partner for an exploration into the darker side of prog rock. Check out the album’s first single and the album’s leadoff track, “Darkest Hour,” which is released today on all music platforms.

Keyboardist Larry Kutcher To Release Second Album “Vertical Realms” Inspired by Lifelong Odyssey on the Spiritual Path

Featuring a mix of Symphonic Prog, Electronic Prog, lyrical acoustic guitar, solo piano, Jazz/World Music, and an ambient soundscape meditation.

Larry Kutcher is a pianist, keyboardist, and composer. From New York originally, he now resides in Los Angeles. He began his musical odyssey with the study of classical violin at the age of six. He moved on from there to the drums and guitar, eventually settling on the piano, with which he could more fully realize and express all the music flowing through him.

Influenced by Surrealism, The Beat Poets, The Firesign Theatre, and Frank Zappa, in particular. Larry also developed theatrical and comedic skills. This led him to recording and performing with Zappa alumni, guitarist Steve Vai. You can hear Larry’s stream of consciousness performance art piece “Little Pieces Of Seaweed”, on Steve Vai’s CD “Flex-Able Leftovers”.

An aficionado of Prog Rock as well, Larry helped co-write “The Emperor’s Clothes” with Alan and Neal Morse of Spock’s Beard, for their 2010 CD release of Spock’s Beard X.

Larry’s extensive musical explorations throughout the years have helped him become very well versed in a variety of genres including classical, jazz, progressive rock, ambient soundscapes, musical theater, and film scores. He is best known for his powerful and intensely personal solo piano work, balancing technical virtuosity with raw emotional expression.

In March of 2023, Larry released his long-awaited debut album for solo piano entitled “Kindred Souls”. His follow up album entitled “Vertical Realms” was released in March of 2024.

Says Larry, “The album title, ‘Vertical Realms,’ and the music created for it, was inspired by my lifelong odyssey on the Spiritual path and how the fruit of these experiences have so beautifully informed matters of the heart, mind, and soul for me. My Spiritual walk is the most important thing to me in this life and music is the gift I was given to express it!”

Unlike his first album “Kindred Souls,” which was a work for solo piano, this time out stylistically there is a mix of Symphonic Prog, Electronic Prog, lyrical acoustic guitar, solo piano, Jazz/World Music, and an ambient soundscape meditation.

Each piece represents and expresses a particular spiritual exploration and its effect on me internally, whether it be Native American Shamanism, Zen Buddhism in its various forms, Hinduism particularly represented by the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda, and ultimately Larry’s chosen path of Christianity.

Larry explains, “One example would be my piece ‘The Shaman’s Path.’ It was directly inspired by my apprenticeship with a Native American Indian Shaman in the California desert. I was a young man at the time and honored that this 80-year-old Medicine Man would want to teach me his ways. Another example is my piece ‘The Narrow Way.’ It was inspired by the Grace and teachings of Jesus Christ, of whom I am a follower. Especially in the areas of loss and forgiveness.”

Larry wrote, played, recorded, mastered, and produced this album in his recently upgraded home studio.

“My best work happens when I get out of the way of the Creative force, if you will, and allow the music to flow through me instantaneously,” says Larry. “Most of the tracks were written in this way, some almost completely realized at the outset.”

Album Tracks:
1. Once We Loved
2. The Sleeper Awakens
3. Synth Wind
4. Contemplation
5. Dawn Beckons
6. The Shaman's Path
7. The Lotus Garden
8. The Harvest
9. The Heart Of Winter
10. The Narrow Way
11. The Last Embrace

Larry Kutcher’s “Vertical Realms” is set to be released first on Bandcamp February 23rd. It will then be released on all the major streaming platforms like Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora, YouTube, etc. on March 1st.

Prog Rock Review: Jethro Tull-The Château D’herouville Sessions 1972

Release Date: March 15, 2024

In July 2014, I covered Jethro Tull's A Passion Play- An Extended Performance (2 CDs/2 DVDs), remastered by Steven Wilson's musical genius. Now, for the first time, that release, which included The Château D'herouville Sessions 1972, is on a 2-LP Gatefold set. Although these are separate tracks, they segue one into the next, keeping the flow of the music, however different, going without pausing.

I also found the back story of these sessions interesting and quite humorous. As I read the extensive liner notes on the gatefold sleeves, Martin Barre's account had me laughing with tears in my eyes. Indeed, at the time, it was not so funny; it was a complete disaster on all accounts. Fortunately for music fans, we can hear it on vinyl's beautiful and warm clarity.

The tracks are solid, and it was a shame that the entire project had to be scrapped then; however, as the saying goes, better late than never. Well, at least for this JT fan. Most fans of their music would agree that the 70s was the band's most fertile period. Tull recorded this music after the immense success of the Thick As Brick album and a long worldwide tour to promote it. I believe most listeners will find tremendous enjoyment from start to finish, except listening to the reading of "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" twice!

The lineup at the time was as follows:

Ian Anderson: vocals, flute, saxophones, acoustic guitar.

Martin Barre: electric guitar.

John Evan: piano, organ, synthesizers, speech.

Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond: bass guitar, speech, Narration on 'The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles'.

Barriemore Barlow: drums, glockenspiel, marimba.

David Palmer (now Dee Palmer) arranged and conducted the orchestra.

Note: Sides 1, 2, and 3 were remixed by Steven Wilson in 2013 (except * 2021).

Side 4, mixed by Ian Anderson.

Track one begins with a short synth ditty, then on to the "Big Top" as a rousing guitar starts as Ian begins his vocals, then an acoustic guitar, which segues into tracks "Scenario" and "Audition," and the music continues to build after some nice acoustic picking. The band's power congeals into the prog rock they were famous for. It reminded me of the Thick As A Brick album.

So on to track four, we go "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day." I fondly remember it being on the flip side of the "Bungle In The Jungle" 45. When I started my podcast a few years back, I had an interview with Ian. The interview never saw the light of day because of a technical issue. After mentioning that it was one of my favorite tracks, he told me it was an environmental awareness statement (which may be old news to some long-time fans). This version is all acoustic and missing the electric guitar; however, it is still excellent.

"Sailor" begins with a soft acoustic guitar and Ian singing at his mellow rhythmic best. The bass playing is notably superb. The keys are layered nicely, and a superior convergence of the band's strengths goes to an instrumental segment and right into "No Rehearsal." Side one closes out firmly, showing a crew working in sync and at its pinnacle. Then, a fast-paced period begins with a marvelous guitar and ends with the way the side started with a brief synth passage.

Side two starts oddly with babies fussing on "Left Right" as an ominous guitar begins. The keys drive forcefully, with a solid bottom keeping the course steady and accurate. Enter that familiar flute as it merges with the keys. A sharp guitar arrives and cuts through with dominance. The bass and cowbell quietly end the track as it moves into "Only Solitaire" and then to "Critique Oblique (Part I and II)." The formula of mellow acoustics to a more potent electric mix then takes over the direction. Flourishes of Tull at their best instrumentally is a highlight of this set, with some tasteful rocking to showcase their abilities and diversity. There are too many changes to count, but all of it is exceptional prog rock. Never knowing what contrast is coming next is the mark of this magnificent lineup.

Side three opens with "Animelee" (1st and 2nd Dance). Another round of instrumental bliss is upon your senses, showcasing again how vital this version of Tull was (perhaps the best version of the band?). They put all their cards on the table as a creative musical unit and continue to succeed. Towards the end, it stops with a brief acoustic piano entry, then back to the prog rock classic instrumental sound, to my delight. "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles*" is next as you wait for "Law Of The Bungle (Part I)", "Tiger Toon," and "Law Of The Bungle (Part II)." The precursor to their hit "Bungle In The Jungle" shows its origin, and you notice some familiar melodies. Their lyrics are a riot, too!

Up next are the different mixes of "Scenario" (1988 mix), "Audition" (1988 mix), "No Rehearsal" (1988 mix), and "Only Solitaire" (1974 mix). It's different from the previous mixes, but all very good. Excellent acoustic guitar starts as it builds to a more aggressive sound, and Ian is in fine form. The flute, as usual, compliments the other instruments with no sacrifice at any position to make way for that. That is the reason this music is so strong consistently. Martin cuts loose on a big riff and then gives way to Ian's short reading. Then it reverts to rocking, blending into "Only Solitaire" and then "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles (1973 mix)". The album closes its fourth and final side with the final version of "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day (1974 mix)" from the Warchild album.

The Château D'herouville Sessions 1972 were a lot to absorb, but I did so eagerly with great joy. Ironically, with all the disappointments from these sessions at the time, we got a double shot of all the music, first in 2014 and now on vinyl ten years later. Don't miss it if you love vinyl, prog rock, and Jethro Tull.

Tracks:

SIDE 1 (Reel date: 10th September 1972):

   1) The Big Top

   2) Scenario

   3) Audition

   4) Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day

   5) Sailor

   6) No Rehearsal

Notes: A clue to what the original album title might have been: ‘the one about the after life’ is faintly written at the top of the tape reel box. ‘Audition’ and ‘No Rehearsal’ were played live in concert during late 1972 and early 1973. ‘Skating Away’ received further overdubs in 1974 and was included on the ‘Warchild’ album released that year. In 1988, ‘Scenario’, ‘Audition’ and ‘No Rehearsal’ were edited together and presented with new flute overdubs on the ’20 Years Of Jethro Tull’ 5LP box set.

SIDE 2 (Reel date: 15th September 1972):

   1) Left Right

   2) Only Solitaire

   3) Critique Oblique (Part I)

   4) Critique Oblique (Part II)

Notes: ‘Left Right’ was played live in concert during late 1972 and early 1973 and ‘Only Solitaire’ was briefly played live as an instrumental at the start of some shows in July 1972. ‘Critique Oblique (Part I)’ was re-worked and re-recorded in early 1973 for ‘A Passion Play’ while elements of ‘(Part II)’ became the passage ‘Best Friends’, also on ‘A Passion Play’. ‘Only Solitaire’ was released without further overdubs a year later in 1974 on the ‘Warchild’ album. This album reel was eventually released in its entirety on the ‘Nightcap’ double CD in 1993 with new flute overdubs.

SIDE 3 (Reel date: 25th September 1972):

   1) Animelee (1st Dance)

   2) Animelee (2nd Dance)

   3) The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles*

   4) Law Of The Bungle (Part I)

   5) Tiger Toon

   6) Law Of The Bungle (Part II)

Notes: This tape box was clearly labeled ‘Side 3’. A missing song entitled ‘Animal Song (Hare’s Spectacles)’ that appeared between ‘Animelee (2nd Dance)’ and ‘Law Of The Bungle (Part I)’ was indeed ‘The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles’. It was cut from the third Château reel and spliced into the 16-track tape for ‘A Passion Play’ side 2 in January 1973 with extensive orchestral overdubs sadly wiping Ian’s original acoustic guitar track. Presented here for the first time is the track as close as possible to how it was recorded in the Chateau. The tune for ‘The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles’ was played in concert on the summer 1972 US tour during an on-stage comedy routine.

The ‘Tiger Toon’ motif was re-recorded in December 1972 to form the opening section ‘Prelude’ of ‘A Passion Play’. An excerpt of ‘Animelee (1st Dance)’ was played live during Ian’s flute solo during late 1972 and early 1973.

This album reel was eventually released in its entirety (minus ‘The Hare…’) on the ‘Nightcap’ double CD in 1993 with new flute overdubs.

SIDE 4 (Original Released Mixes):

   1) Scenario [1988 mix]

   2) Audition [1988 mix]

   3) No Rehearsal [1988 mix]

   4) Only Solitaire [1974 mix]

   5) The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles [1973 mix]

   6) Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day [1974 mix]

Notes: Presented here is a selection of the songs from the three recorded sides of the aborted LP as they appeared on later records. ‘Scenario,’ ‘Audition’, and ‘No Rehearsal’ was mixed and edited in 1988 for the ’20 Years Of Jethro Tull’ 5LP box set for which Ian recorded new flute overdubs. ‘The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles’ is presented in the arrangement completed in early 1973 with orchestral overdubs to end side one and begin side two of the ‘A Passion Play’ LP.

The original 1974 ‘Warchild’ LP mixes for ‘Skating Away’ and ‘Only Solitaire’ complete the selection.
